Abstract

Data from recent trials favor pancolonic chromoendoscopy and targeted biopsy rather than four-quadrant random biopsy in ulcerative colitis. In the current study, 246 patients from 34 Japanese centers were randomized to targeted biopsy without chromoendoscopy or random biopsy. High-definition colonoscopy was employed at the endoscopist's discretion and based on availability; the exact frequency of its use was not specified. Chromoendoscopy was used in both arms if a lesion was identified, and targeted biopsy was encouraged in the random arm as appropriate.
