Abstract
A previous paper by Coombs and Dowsondiscussed the effects of non-parallelism of the sealing lands on the performance of a hydrostatic bearing. This paper is concerned with the advantages of incorporating a taper on part or whole of the bearing land. Analytical solutions to the load, leakage and power loss of such bearings are given, together with comprehensive results which are presented graphically for design purposes. The authors conclude that tapered-land hydrostatic oil bearings have a high inherent stiffness which permits their use without a conventional external flow control as predicted by Hirs, and that for optimum conditions part of the land should remain parallel
