Abstract

AbstractIn this paper, a new approach to obtain extended wide bandwidth characteristics named as super wide band (SWB) operation from modified monopole antenna with defected ground structure (DGS) is presented. The designed antenna is made on dielectric material Flame retardant glassy epoxy (FR-4) having electrical properties of dielectric constant 4.4, loss tangent of 0.02 and its thickness 1.6 mm. Overall compact size of the printed antenna is 31 mm × 18 mm (electrical dimensions are 0.14λ0 × 0.08λ0 at lowest resonant frequency of 1.31 GHz). Bandwidth and gain parameters of the designed antenna are improved by introducing the defective ground structure with semi-circular structure & slots. The proposed antenna resonates at 3.20 GHz, 7.85 GHz and 12.80 GHz frequencies with wide impedance bandwidth (IBW) of 16.7 GHz (1.31–18.01 GHz) bandwidth concerning the − 10 dB reference line of the reflection coefficient. Fractional bandwidth (FBW) and bandwidth ratio (BR) are 172.88% and 13.75:1. Furthermore, the bandwidth dimension ratio (BDR) of 15,435.72 signifies the miniaturization in the structure w.r.t to super wide band characteristics. The radiation patterns are semi-omnidirectional, omnidirectional. The current design can have L – band (1–2 GHz), S – band (2–4 GHz), C – band (4–8 GHz), X – band (8–12 GHz) and Ku – band (12–18 GHz) applications.KeywordsModified rectangular patchDefected ground structure (DGS)Tapered feedlineMonopoleSWB applicationsFBWBR
