Abstract

The marketization of higher education has become a global issue, subjecting the latter to neoliberal ideologies and practices. With the increasing dominance of market forces in higher education, internal quality assurance and enhancement have emerged as important undertakings. This chapter discusses institutional internal quality assurance and enhancement in the Tanzanian contexts. It analyzes institutional internal quality assurance and enhancement challenges such as staffing crisis, relevance of education, and facility-enrolment imbalances. These challenges subject the quality of education provided at stake, therefore, recommending government intervention in financing higher education. The other recommendation is the inclusion of critical pedagogy to allow for profound communication among members of the higher education and devise a means to provide quality and sustainable education. Quality assurance and management in universities should be based on praxis – action and reflection – leading to higher education transformation.
