Abstract A considerable quantity of by-products protein is obtained in the processing of animal hides in the tanning industry. Usually it is disposed of in the form of fertilizer. A brief study has been conducted to determine if this material has any feeding value as a source of protein for chicks. Two tannery by-product meals were prepared in the following manner. Limed hide fleshings were washed and then partially hydrolyzed with a mixture of HCl and H3PO4 and cooked to obtain a homogeneous mixture. The pH was adjusted to about 5.5 with Na2CO3 and, following removal of the fat, the solution was drum-dried to a meal form. The second meal was prepared by omitting the hydrolysis and neutralization procedure and extracting the fat and moisture with acetone.
