Soon Tani’s focused on the game and beating the competition, until finally he takes the New York state championship; the news of his win brings in donations and a new place to live for his family. This picture book treatment of Tani’s real life story leading to his 2019 win covers the ground neatly and quickly, if not deeply, but audiences may have a few questions about the oppression of Boko Haram and the final draw in the match that gave Tani the championship. Digital art breaks up its somewhat bland cheer with touches of interesting texture and effective architectural rhythm in the cityscapes. It’s an account that ducks some issues, but it’s enjoyable to see underdog Tani find his feet and a serious skill in his new country. A closing note gives more information about Tani.
