Abstract

Coexisting with fish known by their fiercely predaceous behaviors has driven the Arapaimas gigas to develop one of the toughest protective layers known in nature, their elasmoid scales. In this work, Yang et al. demonstrated what mechanisms lead to such remarkable toughness.
