Abstract

Mr. Mannion responds to complaints about AWWA members and volunteering. He states that AWWA is the creation of the industry and exists because water professionals and water utilities need a forum for common action–a way to do things that an individual or single utility cannot do alone. The economies and technical progress achieved through associations are incalculably greater than any local water utility could accomplish by itself. Mr. Mannion sees professional‐industrial volunteerism not as an act of charity but as enlightened self‐interest, a means of serving a common cause, that also serves one's own interests. He requests encouragement and support for AWWA volunteers.
