Bacterial species respond differently to consecutive antibiotic exposures with potential consequences on the host microbiome. In this issue of Cell Host & Microbe, Münch etal. investigate the effects of intermittent antibiotic treatments on specific bacteria using a consortium of microbes comprising a functional intestinal microbiota in germ-free mice.
