Turnover in academic institutions has become an increasing problem for a variety of reasons, one of which is widely discussed in library science literature: the increasing rate of retirement. The intersection of knowledge management (KM) and library science can assist in part with this challenge. Implementing KM can capture institutional knowledge and transfer it to existing and new personnel. Successful KM systems are supported by administrators and can result in innovations in workflows and services. KM and Librarians' Library & Information Science degrees and expertise can provide guidance not only in their departments and libraries, but can assist at the institutional level.
