Abstract
Botnets are the preferred tools of cyber-criminals who want to harness the power of large volumes of remote computers to generate massive volumes of spam, launch Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks and generally create controlled havoc on the Internet. Botnets are the preferred tools for cyber-criminals who want to harness the power of large volumes of remote computers to generate massive volumes of spam, launch Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks and generally create havoc on the Internet. Attempts to counter botnets have varied – from the legal avenues pursued by the likes of Microsoft to direct attempts to take over their infrastructures. Steve Gold investigates the effectiveness of these techniques and examines whether we have learned any lessons about the best ways of eradicating this menace.
