Abstract
Biometrics can provide many security benefits in an age when we are more and more reliant on digital systems and applications. However, instances of biometric data breaches have already been seen and underline the importance of getting biometric privacy and security measures right. For example, over 5m sets of fingerprints were compromised last year during a breach at the US Government Office of Personnel Management (OPM) relating to US federal employees, contractors and other subjects of federal background checks. The Philippine Commission on Elections was also subject to a cyber-attack involving personal data of up to 55m people, including over 15m fingerprint records.
