Abstract

The Internet has become the major medium for maps but few resources exist that effectively brings the instruction of cartography into the cloud. In making this transition, the theory of cartography must be closely integrated with a practical knowledge of cloud resources including web hosting, scripting, programming, Application Programmer Interfaces (APIs), and online databases. In addition to knowing the principles of cartography, the modern cartographer should feel comfortable with the entire set of tools that constitute the cloud environment. A series of inter-connected concepts are described that are used to introduce the making of maps using cloud resources. The method alternates between theory and practice. The theoretical component includes such topics as the development of maps and the Internet and the role of cartographic communication. Practical aspects include HTML, JavaScript, php, SQL and the use of various APIs.
