Abstract

This paper explores the role of pastor as wordsmith. Christian priests and ministers are expected to take care with words in many settings; yet surprisingly little attention is paid to poetic sensitivities in ministerial training. Examining the informal exchanges of everyday pastoral ministry, this paper uses theoretical resources from Paul Ricoeur and Karl Rahner to outline a practical theology of "everyday poetics." The pastoral potential of a naturalistic poetic practice is reflected in the light of contemporary trinitarian understandings. This work is part of the author's wider research on the unfolding implications of trinitarian theology for pastoral care.
