Abstract

On March 21, 2011, the American Academy of Pediatrics and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration issued a new policy and recommendation advising parents to keep children rear facing up to age 2 years or until they reach the highest weight and height limits allowed by the car seat manufacturers. 1 American Association of Pediatrics AAP updates recommendations on car seats. http://www.aap.org/advocacy/releases/carseat2011.htmDate: 2011 Google Scholar The change in recommendation reflects scientific evidence that children are safer in rear-facing car seats. Children aged under 2 years are 75% less likely to die or be seriously injured in a crash if they are riding rear facing regardless of the direction of the crash. 2 Henary B Sherwood CP Crandall JR Car seats for children: rear facing for best protection.
