Abstract

A recent court decision involving the alleged negligence of an athletic trainer has placed a renewed focus on the intersection of legal and medical issues associated with the medical care and treatment provided to student‐athletes. In this particular case (Estate of Blakey v. Stetson University), a football player had complained about chest pains during a practice early in the preseason. Although the concern was noted, the school didn’t provide any follow‐up treatment, monitoring, or detailed assessment.
