Abstract

The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act generally prohibits postsecondary institutions from disclosing personally identifiable information in a student's education record to a third party without consent. FERPA compliance can be especially challenging for college and university employees who work remotely, as off‐campus offices and networks may be less secure than those on campus. Likewise, when working virtually, individuals may not have stringent protocols for keeping education records and student data secure and avoiding inadvertent disclosures.
