Abstract

COMPREHENSIVE SPENDING REVIEW. Three words that should strike fear into the hearts of every early years worker, for while some services have been backed with coalition-spoken words, others will find the rug pulled from under their feet and sold, along with the baby and the bath water. We have recently heard of the possibility of the scrapping of the National Year of Speech, Language and Communication, which was due to make an extremely positive impact in 2011. Th is visionary initiative designed to really make a difference to children's lives, will now be subject to this mystical ‘spending review’ that conjures images of the chancellor picking ‘winning’ projects out of a yellow and blue tombola – or worse, to paraphrase a popular comedy show… ‘I'd like funding for the National Year of Communi….’ ‘Computer says nooo.’
