Abstract

Joshua Perschbacher, Director of Veterans Education and Transition Services at the University of Missouri, St. Louis, first felt called back to higher education when he was enlisted in the navy. One of Perschbacher's responsibilities involved personnel staffing and scheduling, including sending people to the Transition Assistance Program classes. During the scheduling process, Perschbacher would consistently hear the same stories from those enlisted: My chief told me now is not a good time to leave the navy. There aren't any jobs out there for civilians. It's not a good time; I should just stay enlisted. “I didn't believe any of that, but the cognitive dissonance is real,” Perschbacher said.
