Abstract

In this chapter, the author describes how shadow education has become a crucial space, has led to a new learning culture, and has contributed to students’ academic success and development in Taiwan. Shadow education has had a long history in Taiwan. The reason why shadow education has been much more popular and diversified in Taiwan these years includes the social context of population transition and the controversial educational reform. In addition, learning materials prepared by shadow education institutions are well organized, access to shadow education has improved as correspondence learning and online learning have become popular, and the flexibility of shadow education also satisfies the needs of students at different stages. Shadow education contributes to students’ academic success and development in multiple ways. Students use shadow education to prepare for exams, and shadow education also provides extra-curricular courses to enrich the academic profiles of students. Shadow education further helps graduates prepare for license certification exams, and even increases the likelihood of their being promoted at work.
