Abstract

In recent years, a part of the Western academic community has explained the rapid postwar rise of the economies of the East Asian countries by Confucian traditions and education as a critical linking factor. Private education started in China as far back as the Spring and Autumn Period and the Warring States. The early immigrant society of Taiwan, despite the restlessness it experienced, had also set up old-style private schools run by the community or by local folks (See, for instance, Yu Wen-I 1962). This shows the early inception of the tradition of private education in this country.
