Abstract

Tun-jen Cheng is assistant professor of political science at the Graduate School of International Relations and Pacific Studies at the University of California at San Diego. Stephan Haggard is associate professor of government at Harvard University. Their work has focused on democratization and the political economy of newly industrializing nations. They are coauthors of Newly Industrializing Asia in Transition (1987). The following essay is based on their editors' introduction to the forthcoming volume Political Change in the Republic of China.
