Tailoring distributed modal sensors for in-plane modal filtering

Abstract

In this note we deal with finding the shape of distributed piezoelectric modal sensors forisolating the in-plane mode shapes of plates. The problem is treated by an optimizationapproach, in which a binary function is used to model the design variable: the polarizationprofile of the piezoelectric layer. The numerical procedure proposed here allows us to findpolarization profiles which take on two values only, i.e. either positive or negativepolarization, that make it possible to isolate particular vibration modes in the frequencydomain.
