Abstract
The article gives insight into current aspects of polymer reaction engineering and process development done at BASF research and outlines future trends of the working fields also with regard to globalization of R&D especially in Asia‐Pacific and China. From our perspective PRE will play a crucial role in development of new system solutions for current and future customer needs. Since applications generally become more sophisticated and customized, a change in the development workflow is required. For more successful product development in the future it should be beneficial to start at understanding of structure property relationships of a desired application rather than at synthesizing and screening new structures. Such a strategy termed by “application seeks product” should be based on the full set of established modeling tools, analytics, and new polymerization techniques.
