Abstract
In this work, we present the first continuous flow process to produce the tailored biofuel 2-butyltetrahydrofuran from renewable resources.
Highlights
Lignocellulose is the most abundant source of biomass available on our planet
The third common strategy to process lignocellulose is based on the hydrolysis of cellulose and hemicellulose to produce monomeric C5 or C6 sugars
These sugars are subsequently converted into platform chemicals such as furfural, 5-hydroxymethylfurfural or succinic acid,[6,7,8] which offer a wide range of possible target molecules
Summary
Lignocellulose is the most abundant source of biomass available on our planet It has great potential as a green and sustainable alternative to petroleum-based chemicals and fuels.[1,2,3,4,5] Besides gasification and pyrolysis, the third common strategy to process lignocellulose is based on the hydrolysis of cellulose and hemicellulose to produce monomeric C5 or C6 sugars. These sugars are subsequently converted into platform chemicals such as furfural, 5-hydroxymethylfurfural or succinic acid,[6,7,8] which offer a wide range of possible target molecules. This idea got a lot of attention and was further investigated in other works.[17,18,19,20,21,22]
