Abstract
In this work, aluminum alloy AA6061-T6 of 6 mm thickness fabricated with butt type weld configuration using underwater friction stir welding with water as cooling medium. Experimentations were performed by considering L9 Taguchi method followed by Grey Relational Analysis (GRA) multiob-jective optimization. Welding parameters tool rotation speed, welding speed, and tilt angle were considered to study its influence on Tensile strength, yield strength impact strength, and % elongation of welded joint. Results showed that Tool rotation speed plays a significant role in mechanical properties of submerged friction stir welded as compared with welding speed and tilt angle. Optimum parameters obtained from Taguchi-GRA multiobjective optimization were considered for comparison of conventional and submerged friction stir welding. Due to refined grains in the nugget zone and strengthening of heat affected zone (HAZ), underwater friction stir welded sample shows highest strength with conventional in air friction stir welded joints.
