Abstract
Abstract There is an obvious demand for individual tagging of starfish. Tests made with Asterias rubens show that various methods involving puncturing of the animal lead to autotomy, abscesses, discarding of the tag, and cannibalism. The starfish demonstrated an astonishing ability to get rid of a presumably cunning harness. Encouraging results were obtained by writing numbers on the aboral surhce with a marking pen containing a concentrated solution of Nile-blue sulphate.
