Abstract

Obesity has been high profile for some time. Health warnings are no longer the preserve of the government and the Department of Health: advice comes from disparate sources such as celebrity chefs and lifestyle programmes. Obesity and lifestyle are inextricably linked. Those who recently watched the much-publicised television programme about an 8-year-old who weighed over 14 stone will have formulated strong opinions. One important question that this case has provoked is whether or not obesity in children is a form of child abuse. If a child was seriously underweight from a poor diet, how would we view the parents then?
