Abstract

Collection of Tabanidae in Patuxent Wildlife Research Center, a 2650-acre Federal wildlife management research area near Washington, D. C, produced 4701 specimens representing 40 species: 18 in Chrysops , 17 in Tabanus , and 5 in Hybomitra . Nearly all material was collected with 3 modified Manitoba horse fly traps and with a nets wung above the collector's head. Routine collections were made 3 times weekly from May 10 through Sept.13, 1968. Five Chrysops species (C. vittatus Wiedemann, C. montanus Osten Sacken, C. pudicus Osten Sacken, C.callidus Osten Sacken, and C. flavidus Wiedemann) dominated the fauna and comprised 58% of the material collected; none of these was very abundant (i.e., none exceeded 700 specimens). Hybomitra lasiophthalma (Macquart)and Tabanus trimaculatits Palisot de Beauvoiswere the most abundant species in their respective genera. Twenty-three species were uncommon or rare (i.e., represented by less than 10 specimens). This study added 8 species to the previous Patuxent faunal list of 37 species; the total fauna of 45 species now includes 75% of the 60 species reported from Maryland.
