Abstract
Objective Describe the epidemiologic characteristics of the sexual partners of the HIV positives at centers of testing and counseling. Methodology Cross sectional study realized with the data base of voluntary testing centers (Brazilian Ministry of Health) of the central region of the country. Results From 2003 to 2006, 75 HIV positive's sexual partners were voluntary tested. From this, 62,7% had more than 8 years of study; 46% were employed and 90,7% stated that they were exposed by sexual intercourse. More than 62% reported not using condoms or not using consistently. Of the tested ones, 54,7% were women and 47,1% of the man reported been heterosexual. Among these sexual partners 24% were tested positive for HIV, but there were no differences between genders. Conclusion This study shows that is high the prevalence of HIV infection between sexual partners of the HIV positive individuals. This result is independent of gender. This is an evidence of exposition between serum discordant sexual partners. These results show the necessity of developing specific strategies for HIV positive's sexual partners to interrupt the transmission of the virus and diminish the impact of the infection in the families.
