Abstract

Purpose: Patellar dislocations are associated with cartilage degradation and an elevated risk of patellofemoral osteoarthritis (OA). Traumatic impact of the medial patella against the lateral condyle of the femur is considered a primary contributor to cartilage degradation that can lead to patellofemoral OA. Patients who experience multiple dislocations are at a higher risk for OA than those who experience a single dislocation, commonly attributed to multiple traumatic episodes. The current study focuses on early cartilage degradation following patellar dislocation, using T1ρ relaxation times to characterize cartilage properties.
