Abstract

Introduction and objectives The objective of this study was to retrace the emotive, relational and sexual preliminary statements of ED in young adult patients. Materials and methods 40 patients between the ages of 18 and 25 were chosen. They had to have been suffering from ED for at least 6 months and have had a stable sexual partner for 3 to 6 months. The following questionnaires were administered in this order: IIEF, HAM-D, RSES CES-D, DSI-R. At clinical level oral medicines for erectile dysfunction were prescribed at low dosages. Results These depressive traits were found. The results for HAM-D was 26.8+/-1.80 and for the Italian version of the CES-D 29.4 +/- 1.5. As far as self-esteem is concerned there is a greater feeling of inadequacy and vagueness of self image (37.6 +/- 8.2). The desire for conformity with, family of origin expectations was high, as well as the ambivalence of trust and self-defence in relation to the partner. The remission of the symptoms was declared between the second and the third interview of psycho-sexological counselling. Conclusions Psychogenic ED in young males is a symptom of the inability of the individual to face the adult world and relationships with women as well as the moment of liberation of the patient from the family.
