Abstract

Hygiene is defined in dictionaries as the science of health. This definition, though formally correct, hides a long history of change in the word's use, from its holistic classical meaning of individual regimens to preserve health to its nineteenth-century connotations of social medicine (including lethal eugenics programs), to its current limited construal as -personal cleanliness - or -germ removal. Andrologic, Dermatologic and Sexologic guidelines do not provide any document about penis hygiene either in the past centuries or in more recent time excluding circumcision counseling. This topic is considered interesting only by cosmetic industries often forgetting that a couple, by definition, is formed by male too. Recently, the introduction of a variety of new aggressive body soaps and bath foams caused an increase in penis pathologies.
