Abstract

Although there are studies on values and attitudes in sexuality, there is a paucity of research on the relationships between perceived sexual attitudes, current sexual behaviour and preferred sexual activity. Objectives • to investigate sexual life styles and attitudes in Australia and Poland; • to examine if there are any relationships between sexual attitudes, preferred and actual sexual behaviour. Design and Method A questionnaire consisting of 136 items was developed and validated by the authors. It was administered online through the university website and required approximately 45 - 60 minutes for completion. The volunteers were recruited through search engines and the links established through the Graduate Program in Sexual Health, The University of Sydney and Institute of Psychology, Adam Mickiewicz University. There were 686 participants (283 Australians and 403 Poles) Results Permissive attitudes toward the sexual and sexually related activities: • 79% respondents accept watching pornography; • 69.2% respondents accept adoption to steady homosexual couples. Current Sexual behaviour: • 86.9% respondents watch pornographic movies; • 66.7% respondents watch sex web sites in the Internet regularly; • 26.5% respondents experience voluntary sadomasochistic games. Preferred sexual behaviour: • 74.9% respondents would be willing to have sex in public places • 23.6% respondents would be willing to force other person to have sex. • 20.2% would be willing to be beaten by their sexual partners Conclusions There were many similarities between two samples. However, Australian sample revealed more permissive attitudes toward different sexually related issues than Polish sample. Results indicated that many respondents presented permissive attitudes toward sexually related issues and expressed willingness to experience new forms of sexual activity.
