Abstract

Every doctor will read and every doctor will gain experience, but to maintain an excellent standard of practice, as every doctor should aspire to, training is required. Gaining experience of training courses early in student's career is good practice, as it shows that student are both keen to improve and able to learn in this environment, as well as enabling student to become familiar and comfortable in these situations. Clinical skills training courses are completely different to routine clinical skills teaching, as student are not based in student's usual environment. The practical sessions allow student to perform this skill for the first time in a safe, calm and enabling atmosphere on models or animal cadavers. The culmination of clinical skills training courses is an assessment and, if student pass this, a certificate of competence. ‘Clinical approach’ is a term that encompasses many different training courses.
