Abstract

The Towneley plays are a collection of biblical plays in the Huntington Library's MS HM 1, a manuscript once owned by the Towneley family of Towneley Hall, Lancashire. The manuscript contains some of the best‐known examples of medieval English drama, including the much‐anthologized Second Shepherds Play and other work attributed to an anonymous poet dubbed the “Wakefield Master.” The plays are often referred to as the Wakefield Cycle, and asserted to have been performed by guilds in the town of Wakefield in Yorkshire's West Riding. However, recent scholarship has challenged that view, prompting critical reevaluation of the collection and of the individual plays themselves.
