Abstract

T. Joseph Reeves, M.D., was a pioneering member of the University of Alabama School of Medicine, who joined its faculty in 1954 and rose through its ranks to be appointed Professor of Medicine. In 1969, he became its third Chair of Medicine, succeeding Walter B. Frommeyer Jr, the second chair, and Tinsley R. Harrison, the founding chair. Reeves had trained in cardiology under Harrison, who is recognized as a founding member of the Southern Society for Clinical Investigation (SSCI). Together, Reeves and Harrison would coauthor a groundbreaking text entitled Principles and Problems of Ischemic Heart Disease, which appeared in 1968 when coronary care units were in their infancy.
