Abstract

There are 38 operational landfill sites in Turkey as of 2010. Management of leachate produced in landfills poses a significant problem due to its pollution level. In order to pre-treat the leachate generated in Bursa Hamitler Landfill, a leachate treatment plant was established in 2004 with a capacity of 500 m 3 /day. Aerobic and facultative lagoons and sequencing batch reactors of this treatment plant was investigated for a period of 32 months and the collected data was used to calculate the ammonia removal efficiency through volatilization. The results of the calculation was compared to the ammonia concentrations measured in the influent and effluent of the treatment plant and it was found that maximum 21% of ammonia was removed via volatilization. Calculation results revealed that the ammonia volatilization due to aeration was related to pH, temperature and the amount of air supplied to the biological treatment units.
