Abstract

In Turkey’s labor market, a rising unemployment rate and a dynamic rate of job vacancy have long been observed simultaneously. The paradox of inability to provide the necessary labor force despite the job vacancy rate of the labor market is often expressed as “disliking jobs” by government and institutions related to employers in public debates. The aim of this study is to evaluate the reasons behind disliking jobs by investigating what kind of jobs the unemployed in the labor market are looking for, their employment tendencies and their job expectations. For this purpose, a survey of 1.258 unemployed persons who were registered to Corum Provincial Directorate of Labor and Employment Agency has been conducted. The findings of the quantitative research show that the workforce is not willing to work in unsecured, temporary, unskilled and low paid jobs even though they are unemployed. The results of the study suggest that the policy makers need to provide more opportunities to increase the number of decent jobs in the fight against unemployment.
