Abstract

An isomorphic structure of control in five systems of nature and society is described and the implications for systemic health and unhealth are discussed. The isomorphism concerns the mechanisms for maintaining information ‘stability’ and yet allowing for information ‘flexibility’ by means of a functional duality in the system's control center, thereby ensuring both the long-term viability and short-term effectiveness of the given system. Maintenance of the control duality in the five systems is essential for the health of each: characteristic states of unhealth are seen whenever either stability or flexibility functions predominate.
