Abstract
Investigators in the fields of neonatology, obstetrics, and anesthesiology have increasingly directed their efforts to identifying the effects of analgesic agents administered to parturients in labor. This article examines the recent literature on the effects of systemic analgesia on the uterus, fetus, and neonate when these agents are administered to the mother during labor. Special attention is paid to the distribution and disposition of drugs administered to the parturient and to the effects of these drugs on maternal uterine activity, fetal heart rate variability, acid-base balance, neonatal respiration, and neurobehavior.
