Abstract
The cytochromes of cytoplasmic and mesosomal membranes of Bacillus subtilis The cytoplasmic membranes and the mesosomal membranes of Bacillus subtilis were separated by means of a method previously described and it was shown that: 1. 1. The cytoplasmic membranes contain exclusively the cytochromes α 553, α 557 and α 600 ( a + a 3) and possess high NADH oxidase, succino-dehydrogenase, succino-oxidase and (ascorbate + N, N, N′, N′-tetramethyl-1,4-phenylenediamine (TMPD)-oxidase activities. 2. 2. The mesosomal membranes contain exclusively the cytochromes α 548.5 and α 561.5. Their succino-oxidase activity is practically nil; neither cytochrome is reducible by succinate. On the contrary, their NADH-oxidase and ( ascorbate + TMPD)-oxidase activities are comparatively higher; both cytochromes can accept electrons from NADH and ( ascorbate + TMPD).
