Abstract
The harpacticoid copepod subfamily Donsiellinae was erected within the family Laophontidae by Lang (1948) to accommodate a single species, Donsiella limnoriae Stephensen, an intimate associate of ‘gribble’, wood-boring isopods of the genus Limnoria. Examination of the syntypes, together with additional conspecific material from the English Channel coast of France, has provided details for a redescription of the species. It is revealed that because of essential differences in morphology, not the least a biarticulate antennal exopod, D. limnoriae is misplaced within the Laophontidae. New material from New Zealand and Australia, collected from inter-tidal wharf piles and from decomposing wood recovered from depths to 1514 m, has allowed a redefinition not only of the genus Donsiella but also of the subfamily. Four new genera and eight new species are described from this region and aspects of both their phylogeny and ecology are presented. It is proposed that the Donsiellinae is a highly specialized and advan...
