Abstract
Abstract Monotis (Maorimonotis) is confined to the New Zealand — New Caledonian Maorian Province in Norian (Warepan) rocks. The subgenus includes four species: M. routhieri Avias, the type species, M. calvata Marwick, and M. maniapotoi and M. awakinoensis n.sp. All but the last named occur both in New Zealand and New Caledonia. The earliest member of the subgenus, M. maniapotoi, shows similarities with M. pachypleura (Teller), from which it may have evolved. The youngest member, M. calvata, probably developed by neoteny from M. routhieri. The subgenus Maorimonotis is unique amongst Monotis in the possession of a well marked juvenile growth pause; the lineage M. maniapotoi-awakinoensis-routhieri-calvata is characterised in part by this feature occurring later and later in ontogeny.
