Abstract

The systematic behaviour of the nuclear matrix element for l-forbidden M1 transitions as a function of neutron number has been investigated. It has been found that the value of the matrix element drops by a large factor at neutron magic numbers. Further it is seen that at these magic numbers the experimental value deviates more from single-particle estimates while it closely approaches the value calculated by Arima et al., on the basis of configurational mixing.
