Abstract

A well established set of data on L X-ray production cross sections induced by 4He ion bombardment of 46 ⩽ Z ⩽ 70 elements has been analysed with the aim of testing various theoretical approximations for the description of the ionization process. The replacement of the screened hydrogenlike wave functions generally used in the ECPSSR model with the more realistic Dirac-Hartree-Slater ones, combined with a united atom approximation in the treatment of the binding effect, suggested by our group, produces some improvements in the agreement with the experimental data. More refined Coulomb deflection corrections are needed to get a good agreement between predicted and experimental cross sections. The introduction of vacancy rearrangement effects, although in the right sense, gives only slight further improvements.
