Abstract
An axisymmetric system for toroidal confinement of low- beta plasma is considered which consists of an internal ring (or rings), external trim coils, and azimuthal-field winding. Plasma current is assumed to have negligible effect on the field. The machine currents produce easily calculated flux surfaces and constant-B surfaces. The relative shape of these surfaces (i.e., the variation of B over the flux surfaces and normal to them) plays an important role in calculations of plasma stability. When designing experimental tests of these calculations, one wishes to control this B-variation in specified ways. The techniques described here can systematically find the machine currents required in many such cases.
