Abstract

Introduction: Pleomorphic adenoma is the most common benign tumour of the parotid gland and the management of choice is surgical excision. The extent of surgery / parotidectomy is however controversial and is further complicated by the diverse terminology used to describe seemingly similar operations. The aim of treatment remains the complete removal of the tumour with avoidance of disabling sequelae and complications. We undertook a systematic review to determine the extent of parotidectomy for the treatment of a primary pleomorphic adenoma (PPA) of the parotid gland and to compare outcomes associated with the different surgical interventions.
