Abstract

Phytochemical analysis of Encelia species yielded numerous chromene and benzofuran derivatives. Systematic comparison of the chemical profiles revealed three distinct groups of species. The species affinities, as elucidated by the chromene and benzofuran patterns, largely paralleled those based on recent morphological and anatomical findings and are thought to reflect the phylogeny of the genus.
