Abstract

In this paper, a systematic procedure is presented to feed placement in multi-mode MIMO antennas based on characteristic mode theory. Using modal radiated power, a circuit model for multi-mode MIMO antennas is proposed and optimal feed positions are found to excite orthogonal modes of these antennas. Characteristic mode analysis is done to determine orthogonal radiating modes of the antenna and using modal radiated power and reflection coefficient of the antenna, optimal feed locations are determined to excite these modes. The proposed method is verified by simulation and measurement of a four-port MIMO antenna. This method can be used to feed locate in any planar antenna with any number of orthogonal modes.
